Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has redirected its focus to expand its cloud services into India, shifting its attention from prior efforts in countries like Singapore and the Philippines where it faced competition from major US providers such as Amazon and Microsoft.
Alibaba, already the leading cloud provider in China, aims to assist businesses in India by providing access to its cloud services, thereby allowing Chinese companies to establish a stronger international presence. The company disclosed these expansion plans during its Apsara Conference, coinciding with the introduction of its new server chip, the Yitian 710.
This chip will be integrated into Alibaba’s proprietary servers, known as Panjiu, designed for both general-purpose storage and specialized AI computing. While e-commerce constitutes the majority of Alibaba’s current revenues, cloud computing is identified as a strategic area for potential long-term profitability, with the company’s cloud sector contributing 8% to its overall revenue.
