AWS cloud region
AWS increases its European presence by opening a new cloud computing region
In an effort to increase its cloud presence in Europe, AWS has opened a new cloud computing area in Switzerland specifically, which is expected to be inaugurated in the second half of 2022.
This new cloud region in Switzerland will be the seventh of the cloud computing regions of the Amazon Cloud, where there are already 6 active AWS cloud domains distributed in France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Sweden.
Another cloud region is expected to be launched in 2023 in Spain
Details of the cloud zone in Switzerland
The new cloud site will be composed of several separate availability zones (AZs) that refer to data centers in different physical locations within the same one area, and each data center will have independent power, cooling, and physical security, and these centers will be connected to a low latency network.
This cloud area will be of benefit to Swiss companies and institutions as they will be able to run their applications across 3 different Availability Zones spread across Switzerland. This would make them benefit from better fault tolerance, especially for high availability applications.
It should be noted that there are more than 10,000 existing customers in Switzerland who use Amazon cloud services every month in their businesses, from private and public institutions and companies.
The most recent report from Canalys indicated that AWS was the largest provider of cloud services in the world in the third quarter of 2020, given its huge revenue volume compared to its competitors. Amazon Cloud Services owns roughly a third of the global cloud infrastructure market.
AWS announced that a new cloud computing area will be opened in Indonesia, Spain, and Japan, bringing the total of its geographic regions to 24, including the Zurich region in Switzerland.
